Exhibition Catalog - Hergé: THE EXHIBITION

Who doesn't know Tintin? But who really knows Hergé? How did Hergé conceive his stories? How did he come up with the idea of drawing a reporter with a toupee? Why did he try his hand at painting? Did Hergé resemble his characters? Why didn't he continue The Adventures of Jo, Zette and Jocko? What is the Hergé style? These and other questions are part of this catalog - or "paper exhibition" - which includes great treasures from the collections of the Hergé Museum: original drawings by the author, sketches, photographs and archival documents. Through a unique journey, we enter the artistic universe of a brilliant and multifaceted artist, capable of using all the media at his disposal to create compositions ranging from illustration to comics, through advertising, press, fashion design and the plastic arts. The lavishly illustrated book includes a prologue by musician Julián Hernández and pages dedicated to the adventures of Tintin and Hergé in Spain by Joan Manuel Soldevilla Albertí, a specialist in Hergé's work. Discover the artist who has captivated millions of readers from 7 to 77 years old all over the world!

In 'Hergé, son of Tintin', he tells the story of the creator's origins, and does not reveal what is behind one of the most influential figurines of the 20th century. Diving into interviews, letters and testimonies, many of them unpublished until now, Peeters reveals the hidden secrets behind Hergé and Tintin.

                Del Quijote A Tintín

Unsuspected relationship between a book of "mockery" and a "children's" comic strip

Bringing together and studying in the same research the relationship between the stories of two characters of the stature of Don Quixote and Tintin is not within the reach of just anyone. Only someone radically in love with Hergé's art and his "clear line" and, at the same time, a great connoisseur of Cervantes' immortal novel could take on this task. "From Quixote to Tintin" is organized as a kind of bilingual dictionary Quixote-Tintin, Tintin-Quixote, with different slogans ordered alphabetically where the parallels offered by both characters are analyzed, which are many more than we would have thought before Joan Manuel Soldevilla discovered them and put them in value before our astonished eyes. "From Quixote to Tintin" is, from beginning to end, a feast of sensitivity and intelligence.

                                €30.00

Created by Hergé at the request of Cœurs Vaillants, this series for young people seemed more in keeping with the morals promoted by the French Catholic weekly than with the exploits of a boy without a family and left to his own devices like Tintin. The action, very animated, shows a sense of slapstick that is delightful, as Hergé's humor here is more graphically exaggerated than in Tintin.... The Adventures of Jo, Zette and Jocko is a comic strip created by the Belgian Hergé, the creator of the famous series The Adventures of Tintin. Much less popular than this one, the series stars two children, Jo and Zette Legrand, and their pet, the monkey Jocko. Composed of six issues, it was eventually abandoned by its author, who, overwhelmed and overtaken by the success of Tintin.

                                  €21.50

The planet Tintin created by Hergé is a drawn and imaginary world, but with a real foundation that, although it belongs, physically, politically, socially and culturally, to the moment in which it was drawn -a vision of the world certainly Eurocentric, but inserted in the tradition of travel books-, at the same time that it is already history, it transcends, together with its characters, places, situations and adventures, all time and becomes an archetype worthy of study. Beyond the pleasure they give us as an artistic work, in the simple genius of the plots and their images, Tintin's travels and landscapes form an "imago mundi" that in each drawing treasures a geography, real or invented, in places that can be located on a more or less identifiable map.

Tintin and the Alpha Art becomes part of the classic collection of The Adventures of Tintin. Tintin and the Alpha Art is published with a new presentation, with a layout that makes it easier to read the adventure, and highlights the most finished sketches. And above all, the final pages present a series of newly found documents, which give a new version about the end of the story, and the eight possible endings of the book.

Fans of Tintin's adventures had to wait eight years after Flight 714 to Sydney to read Tintin and the Picaros, which began appearing in 1976. Hergé was now only working for pleasure, and was in no hurry. The idea took time to take shape. The setting was clear to him: South America.

This album marks a return to adventure. It begins to appear in the weekly Tintin, in September 1966, four years after the end of The Castafiore Emerald. Here we meet again Rastatopoulos, whom we thought drowned at the end of The Red Sea Sharks, and his friend Allan. A new figurine appears: the very rich Lazlo Carreras, the man who never laughs.

La Castafiore announces her arrival in Moulinsart, and the captain tries to flee the trip in a hurry, but stumbles on a broken step that they have not yet come to fix and breaks his ligaments. The rumor of a sentimental relationship between the singer and the 'old sea dog' is born and everything is full of paparazzi. And the jewels disappear...

Slave and arms trafficking are at the core of the plot of this adventure, and as usual, Tintin and the captain are involved by a series of coincidences. This album is a sort of continuation of Tintin in the Land of Black Gold, and a large number of characters that appeared in previous episodes reappear in it. The emir Ben Kalishn Ezab, in trouble in his country, sends his little son, the terrible Abdalah to Moulinsart. Tintin and the captain flee from his mischief, leaving him with the long-suffering Nestor, and head for Khemed to try to help the emir.

This is a comic masterpiece. We prefer not to explain the plot of the story here, so that those who read it for the first time can fully enjoy it. From the beginning, the events are chained at a fast pace: an explosion is heard, a storm breaks out, objects break, the power goes out and Serafin Brass arrives for the first time in the series.

It is not science fiction but an anticipation as accurate as possible. Hergé contacted Dr. Bernard Heuvelmans, author of the book L'homme parmis les étoiles (Man Among the Stars), a specialist on the subject, who collaborated with the team.

Tintin travels to the country of Khemed, where a power struggle pits Emir Ben Kalish Ezab against Bab El Ehr, each financed by a different oil company.
